Yamato (400s-794 AD)

 

By the 400s AD the Yamato clan had established itself as the leading clan. They were supposedly descended from the goddess Amaterasu. The Yamato chiefs eventually called themselves the emperors of Japan. The clan always lacked a power but were never overthrown. The Fujiwara eventually took control, but without overthrowing the Yamato.
